Travis and I headed to Portland for my first group art show in Portland at the edgy and distinctly urban art gallery, “TheCompound” located in the Pearl District. They represent independent and underground Japanese artists and also just plain old wickedly talented artists and here is a blurb about the show concept to the artists from Ryuichi the curator.

The show features Japanese artist Ryuichi Ogino (Ogi). The title of
the show is “Idealistically Hypocritical”. The concept for the show is
“MASH UP”. Mash Up was inspired by the DJ technique of combining two
different songs to create one composition. Ogi wants to mix other
artists works with his own for a unique installation show. The only constraint is the
size. The piece needs to be 8.5″ x 11.75″. Subject and medium is your
choice.

The painting titled “Struggle with Ego” was my submission and there were probably forty other artists participating as well. The place was PACKED, exactly how an art opening should be and upon chatting with Ryuichi I discovered he was heartfelt in his hopes for people accepting all expressions of art including the wide range that made up his Mash up. It was soooo much fun and inspiration to be around so much creative and youthful energy and art! Check them out if you can, their retail floor boggles the imagination as well. Then onto salon77 where a mix of my originals and reproductions filled the walls and the owner Sara had an elaborate and tasty spread of appetizers, champagne and beer for the many art lovers who stopped by.

It has been three months since I last added comments to my blog because it started to feel like work that i didn’t have time for which is a bit naughty of me but selling five paintings in the last four weeks is the culmination of a year of hard work exhibiting in both Canada and the United States. In June, I went up to Squamish and installed 16 of my limited edition reproductions at Onatah, 7 of them new from my 4 shows earlier this year and the response has been fabulous! Seeing my surf art on one wall with my buddha art and my urban art on another wall, it looked pretty cool and I felt proud to be the artist. The same collection was installed in Sushi Okalani in Hood River this month and runs through to the beginning of October. I also was asked by the owner Thomas, of a very hip interior and garden decorating shop in the Pearl District called “Digg”, to do three small buddha art pieces which are displayed nicely right at the entrance of his store. My Urban Art series from the State of the Art show in Whistler in April found a wonderful new home this summer at the Columbia Art Gallery in Hood River and I also installed a few reproductions and a few originals at the Dalles Art Centre. I was asked to do two commissions in July and August, one for the owner of Sushi Okalani which I absolutely love. It is a painting of a geisha who also happens to be a poet and she sits in front of a full moon holding her scroll and calligraphy brush with her muse, a dragon watches over her. Then a few weeks ago I was invited to do live art at the annual fundraising event for the Columbia Centre of the Arts at a beautiful old outdoor venue at a local winery. There were four other artists also doing live art and a great band played while wine was served and art was created. Now as summer feels like it is drawing to a premature close (boo hoo!!) my thoughts are turning to what my next series will be and it will probably continue the Japanese geisha theme but we will see!!

As you will see on the attached ”Artsy News update”, I was very happily invited to participate in the prestigious “State of the Art” show where Gritty Urban meets Mountain Culture. It was a ten day long celebration of everything that Whistler does best!

This month’s themed event invites artists to use Red and lots of it! This scan has come out a little orange but you get the idea. This is in Kanji style which is a loose style script and I enjoyed the challenge of making the character pop out.

The buddah figure painting is of my lavastone Balinese buddha which sits in my garden outside of my studio window here in Hood River. I painted it once before but this one seems to pop more too.

The first night around 1000 people attended and there were over 70 wineries participating. The second night, over 1300 people attended and I met so many fabulous wine and art lovers! This painting titled, “The Dresser” sold and while I got contact information from the patron, the lady standing right behind him was waiting to buy it as well. When I told her that it had just sold, she decided that she would be thrilled if I just painted it again,…three times the size, please! Two reproductions also sold and another commission to do a man’s wife’s portrait and so I celebrated the next day by skiing in Whistler’s 120 inches of fresh snow. Cornucopia was an elegant and fun event and I am most blessed by the people that I met who were touched by my work and that for me, is what it is all about. Touching people.
